If you are someone who is interested in purchasing a home sauna, you will discover that there are several different choices available. You can find everything from pre-built saunas to do-it-yourself sauna kits in several different sizes and styles. The two most common choices you will run into, however, are steam saunas and far infrared saunas. You need to do your research in order to determine which choice is the best for you and your family’s needs.
A steam sauna is the traditional style sauna that comes from Finland. Taking a sauna has been a cultural tradition in Finland for centuries; it is very common for every home to have a personal sauna. Friends often spend time together taking a sauna and business partners relax after brokering a deal in the sauna hot room. A steam sauna is a room made from softwood, such as cedar or ash, and built with long benches with enough room for the average sized person to recline comfortably. A small furnace on one side of the room heats up several rocks, which, in turn, heats the room. This creates a dry heat room, but if you want a steam sauna, you simply pour water over the rocks and the room fills will steam.
Steam saunas are great for people who enjoy the traditional sauna, but innovations in sauna technology have led to the far infrared sauna. Infrared saunas have solved two of the most common problems people find when they use a traditional sauna: that they take too long to heat up and that the steam makes the room unbearably hot. On average, the steam sauna takes an hour or more to heat up and heats up to about 185 degrees Fahrenheit. Infrared saunas, however, take significantly less time to warm up and the temperature only rises to about 100-130 degrees Fahrenheit. You still feel as though you are receiving the same amount of heat therapy, however, because infrared saunas are much more efficient. The heaters focus their heat on the people themselves instead of the room in general so that 80% of the heat is absorbed by your body providing you with maximum health benefits and a relaxing session!
